Marcus Kahale and Alissa Claude thought they knew what to expect as first-year junior counselors at Camp Lenape. Since second grade, they have spent every summer there, but this time would be different. A young camper, Bri, confides in Alissa that a stranger approached her at night. Then, in the middle of the night, Marcus witnesses two men exiting the cabin area and entering the woods. One of the men has something heavy slung over his shoulder. The next day Marcus realizes his little sister Bri is gone.

Alissa is the last person to see Bri. Marcus doesn’t believe it when staff says Bri is sent home for a spider bite. He’s determined to find out what happened to his sister and he needs Alissa’s help. With their friends, Marcus and Alissa decide to investigate. They set off, looking for Bri, but they may soon discover she’s not the only one that’s in danger.
There’s a big secret at Camp Lenape. None of the adults are as they seem. The teens need to find Bri before other campers go missing.

Author Event: An Unexplained Death with Mikita Brottman

Author Mikita Brottman will join us to talk about her book, An Unexplained Death, The True Story of a Body at the Belvedere. You can purchase a book ahead of time at the shop or when you come in to the event and she will sign after the discussion.

An Unexplained Death is an obsessive investigation into a mysterious death at the Belvedere—a once-grand hotel—and a poignant, gripping meditation on suicide and voyeurism

“The poster is new. I notice it right away, taped to a utility pole. Beneath the word ‘Missing,’ printed in a bold, high-impact font, are two sepia-toned photographs of a man dressed in a bow tie and tux.”

Most people would keep walking. Maybe they’d pay a bit closer attention to the local news that evening. Mikita Brottman spent ten years sifting through the details of the missing man’s life and disappearance, and his purported suicide by jumping from the roof of her own apartment building, the Belvedere.

As Brottman delves into the murky circumstances surrounding Rey Rivera’s death—which begins to look more and more like a murder—she contemplates the nature of and motives behind suicide, and uncovers a haunting pattern of guests at the Belvedere, when it was still a historic hotel, taking their own lives on the premises. Finally, she fearlessly takes us to the edge of her own morbid curiosity and asks us to consider our own darker impulses and obsessions

About the Book In Pursuit, The Hunt for the Beltway Snipers

The true story of the Washington, DC, snipers, by the cop who took them down

October 2, 2002. A bullet pierced the window of a crafts store in Maryland, just missing the cashier. But other bullets hit their targets. In Pursuit follows the hunt for the Beltway snipers during the twenty-three-day shooting spree that terrorized Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. David Reichenbaugh, the criminal intelligence operations commander for the Maryland State Police, and commanding officer at the scene during the snipers’ capture in Myersville, Maryland, played a major role in the investigation from the first day of the killing spree through its final act, as the snipers were cornered in a rest area in western Maryland. He is one of a very few who know the complete details of the investigation and capture of the snipers.

Working against the clock with few clues and little evidence, hundreds of investigators from federal, state, county, and city law enforcement agencies struggled to find answers to the questions: Who were the killers? Was their choice of victims random? And most of all, Why did they kill? When the killers began leaving notes to taunt the police, investigators were finally able to begin assembling a picture, piercing the fog of uncertainty and terror that filled the region. In Pursuit is a step-by-step procedural.

that offers an inside look at how investigators made sense of the dizzying array of facts, conjectures, motives, and opportunities and brought to heel two of the most diabolical killers in the nation’s history.

David Reichenbaugh served as the criminal intelligence operations commander for the Maryland State Police, and as the commanding officer at the scene, during the Beltway snipers’ capture in Myersville, Maryland.
