Aileen Cambell

Aileen Campbell was born near Brahan Castle in northern Scotland. An art enthusiast even as a young girl, she was greatly influenced by J. Pittendrigh Macgillivray, the appointed king's limner, or royal painter, for Scotland. During World War II, she served as a registered nurse and certified nurse-midwife in both Scotland and England before immigrating to Canada. After moving to the United States, where she served again as an R.N. and CNM in Maryland, she retired in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. There she continued to paint and won recognition for her accomplished watercolors. Besides studying art, she developed an interest in the music and literature of Scotland. Aileen passed in 2016.

This is an inspiring and delightful story: the tale of a remarkable emigrant Scotswoman who achieved a rich and complex new life in the New World. It is impossible in a few words to summarize the accomplishments of the remarkable Aileen Cambell. Hers is a sorry of joys and sorrows, of difficulties encountered and conquered, of the ardors of professional life as a nurse-midwife set against the ups and downs of trying to maintaining a marriage and raise children. Aileen’s books is filled with both pathos and humor- almost as a great a treasure as the indomitable Aileen herself. – Calib Crowell
